2010 Kenya Triennial Information

The year 2010 is here! It seemed like the far, distant future in 2007 when we decided to accept the invitation of USFW-Kenya to hold our next triennial conference in Kenya.  But now the time is already here to make the final plans for the conference.  The host committee and the executive board are busy finalizing the accommodation and programming details.  We must now make final decisions and plans for attending.  I hope the information in this article can help you with that process and with completing the registration form that is on the website and also published in the January/February issue of THE ADVOCATE.

The conference is being held July 1-4, 2010, at the Sun N Sand Beach Resort (http://www.sunnsand.info) in Mombasa, Kenya. Standard rooms at the Sun N Sand Beach resort have two beds--a single and a double.  The room prices include three meals per day and taxes.  Also included in the cost as listed on the registration form is the K.Sh.500/- (about $7USD) per person daily conference fee to pay for meeting rooms, etc.  Costs per person are based on either one, two or three persons per room.  Children under age 4 are free, if they are with parents.  The cost for children ages 5-12 is one-half that of an adult, if staying in a room with two adults, or three-fourths that of an adult, if staying with only one adult or in own room sharing with another child.  Youth over the age of 12 are considered adults.

The three meals per day are served buffet style in the dining room. There are vegetarian options, also.  Meal times are Breakfast – 7:00 am – 9:30 am; Lunch – 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm; and Dinner - 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm.   There will be tea times, too, as part of the conference.

Please check the hotel website ( http://www.sunnsand.info/ ) for descriptions of the rooms and facilities.  Be sure to bring swimsuits and other sportswear, as times for enjoying the resort activities and walking along the beach are being included in the conference program schedule.  To help with travel plans, the hotel is offering the same rates for two days before and two days following the conference dates.  This is a good chance to spend some more time at a wonderful resort at a reasonable cost.

As part of the program schedule, we are planning time on Saturday afternoon for tours of some of the sights in the Mombasa area.  Please indicate on the registration form and include payment if you want to go on one of these three planned tours:

MOMBASA CITY TOUR –US$26

A half day guided tour of this Coastal town, serving as the Gateway to East Africa and for centuries a trading port. Visit includes the Old Town with its narrow little streets, the colourful markets, the Old Port & Fort Jesus built by the Portuguese in 1593.  And your tour culminates with visit of the Akaamba Carvers den; where hundreds of wood carvers transform logs into beautiful carvings.

BAMBURI “HALLER” PARK AND MAMBA VILLAGE—US$30

Bamburi Nature Trail, recently re-named “Haller Park” is one of the finest examples of land reclamation successes in Kenya’s history.  At the helm of this since 1976, Dr Haller, has converted used quarries into a natural park, today home to hippos, zebras, oryx and many other birds and reptiles.  We offer an afternoon walk through this park and finish off at the Mamba Village, Africa’s largest crocodile farm where you will see over 11,000 crocodiles.

NGOMONGO VILLAGES –US$23

Ngomongo Villages is a presentation of the ways of life of the rural peoples of Kenya and was created in 1991. Located on the North Coast suburb of Shanzu, this former quarry and barren rock is today a Garden of Eden, with indigenous and protected species of plants and trees. It is a unique presentation of ten most colourful and diverse peoples - The Akamba, The Luo, Rendile, Mijikenda, Kalenjin, Turkana, Kikuyu, Masaai, Pokot and the El Molo. You will walk through these villages and see how they live and take part in some of the daily activities.

The USFWI conference program will include speakers from Kenya, Jamaica, Cuba, and the United States.  There will be times for workshops, business, worship, evening vespers, teatime home groups, and more.  Plans are being made for displays and a bookstore.  Registration fees are US $40.00 or K.Sh.3,000/- until March 30, when they will be US $65.00 or K.Sh.4,875/-.          Daily rates are US $15.00 or K.Sh.1,125/- and US $20.00 or K.Sh.1,500/- after March 30.  The final registration date is May 15.

USFWI and FUM are making plans for tours to extend US visitors’ time in Kenya.  These will include options for mission area visits, work camp experiences, FUM General Board Meetings, and safari trips.  Check this website for more information and for help in making flight reservations.  The Kenyan Host Committee is also working on plans to greet visitors at the airport and bus station and to help them get to the hotel.  Some housing in private homes before or after the conference may be available, if necessary.

If you have other questions about the conference or the registration process, please contact me.  The easiest way is by email:  marcinko@bloomingdaletel.com  Please put USFWI Triennial in the subject line.  I hope many of you will make plans soon to be in Mombasa in July, where we will, as our theme says, “See, I am doing a new thing. (Isaiah 43:19)”
